National STEM Education and Training Strategy

Professional Learning Data Capture - STEM and digital skills
Retrospective: 1 August 2017 to 31 July 2018

Dear Colleague

This survey is aimed at organisations that provide external professional learning support in relation to sciences, technologies, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and digital skills to practitioners in the following sectors: early learning and childcare, primary, secondary, additional support needs, school-based technical support staff, community learning and development and college/FE practitioners.

We would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes to enter the data about the professional learning your organisation has provided to practitioners in these sectors. This will help us to establish a baseline of activity for the STEM Career-Long Professional Learning (CLPL) provided nationally between 1 August 2017 and 31 July 2018.

We appreciate that providing this data may be a challenge given the time that has elapsed since then. We are, therefore, happy to receive estimated figures if accurate data is not available. We have also kept this survey as simple as possible to make it easier to complete.

A separate survey is being developed for practitioners to capture other forms of professional learning they have accessed, including internally provided CLPL and independent learning.

Why are we asking you to complete this survey?
The information you provide will help us to allocate resources to meet the ambitions of the STEM Education and Training Strategy and will enable us to address gaps and imbalances in provision. We will produce an overall analysis of the data provided to us and will share this with key partners such as Scottish Government and Scottish Funding Council to inform decision-making and planning in relation to the STEM strategy. This analysis will also be shared widely with the education system through Education Scotland’s communication channels. The data provided by your organisation will not be identifiable from the analysis. However, we have given you the option below of being listed as one of the participating organisations.

If you require any additional information or assistance with completing this survey, please contact Ian Menzies, Senior Education Officer, on email: ian.menzies@educationscotland.gsi.gov.uk

We would be very grateful if you could complete this survey by 14th December 2018.

Your data - provision of career-long professional learning

Please enter the total cumulative hours of career-long professional learning (CLPL) in STEM and digital skills that your organisation took a lead in providing between 01 August 2017 and 31st July 2018.

‘Cumulative’ hours are the total hours of CLPL that a group of attendees has taken part in. For example, if a session lasts for 2 hours, and you have 15 attendees, then the cumulative total of hours for that session is 30 hours.
